At least five people have been killed and 35 wounded in twin explosions at a busy marketplace in the northeast Pakistani city of Lahore.

The blasts took place on Monday at the Moon Market in Lahore's Iqbal Town locality, a senior police official said.

"There were two explosions in a congested market, we have sent rescue teams to the site," said senior city police official Shafiq Ahmad.

"Thirty people were injured and the fire engulfed a building and shops. There were two blasts with an interval of about 30 seconds. One was in front of a bank and one was in front of a police station."

The blasts were about 30 metres apart, but Ahmad said they were still investigating whether bombs caused the explosions.

Pakistan TV stations showed footage of buildings in flames as rescue workers rushed to the chaotic scene and fireman struggled to put out the blazes.
